Yesterday I watched as my three children laid me to rest.   There they stood beside my body, two pairs of blue eyes and one pair brown looking down at me, alternating between tears and sniff-dried smiles as their mother greeted public mourners and they hugged each other with the private arms of vanished memories and inside jokes.    If I do say so myself, my wake and funeral were quite an event, something worth waiting for, a real sight for these sore, dead eyes.    From inside the box and then from up above I watched the whole thing, and I had the time of my life seeing my life go on without me.

Thinking About Dad

The other day I was reviewing the entries we've received for the "A Dad Is... and I'm really pleased with the results.

Just about everyone picked up on the personal, slice of life spirit of the contest. The entries are real life, verbal snapshots, heartfelt memories that speak volumes about the relationship between a father and child. Here are some of my favorites.

Daddy Outpost is looking for video, for the "A Dad Is ... contest.

Tell us on video what you think "A Dad Is... and we'll put it on the site. But make sure you enter a written answer as well. And per previous directions tell everyone you know about the contest. The sooner we get enough quality entries the sooner we can start working on the illustrated page-a-day calendar.

Easiest way to get video to us is to upload it YouTube or one of the other video sites we support and send me the link at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

And while you're in the Hollywood mode take video of the whole family and send that to us as well.

Regards,

Larry

King Kong and Fay Wray

You’ve got to keep your kids hungry. You’ve got to push them into the cold water to find out if they can swim. Sometimes, you’ve just got to become King Kong and let them be Fay Wray. Sometimes.

I’ve got friends of mine that give their kids everything just because they can. Other folks I know tip toe around their children, not wanting to get in their way, actually a little afraid of the full blown humans they’ve created. There are those who I’ve encountered who want to protect their kids from every Tom, Dick and hairy situation. And a few (God help them) even want to be their kids’ friends.

Look, my love for my kids is unbreakable; it’s death-defying and even deeply religious - I actually see my kids as my ticket to a world without end (amen). But just because I’d die for them and someday will be more content to die because of them, I still never forget that this love for my children has to take the shape and outline of no other love I will ever give.
